Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 20-05-2022 19:16

I have reinstalled Minimserver of a Synology DS781+ running DSM 7.1. When I click run it starts but in only seconds it shuts down again. It reports that it was manually shut down. Thinking that I had botched the reinstall I have reinstalled it to no avail. I haven't had this problem before, it's running fine on a Synology 716+ also running DSM 7.1

There have been a few other reports of this error message. Is MinimServer running (visible to control points) when you get this message?

Try powering the 718+ off and on. Does this fix the problem?

If this does not fix the problem, which version of MinimServer is installed on the 718+?

RE: Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 20-05-2022 20:49

MinimServer is not visible to control points. If I ping the NAS from my router and thus ensure that both LAN ports are running and then rescan the network, Linn Kazoo still reports the MinimServer as being unavailable. If I try to open it from Safari (I'm a Mac user) after having logged into the NAS, Safari reports that the NAS is unavailable, even though I'm logged into it. Shutting down and restarting the NAS doesn't help. The 718+ is running MinimServer 2.1.2-2102.

These problems started a while ago. I thought that the problem might be related to an addressing problem with my router. Another device on the ethernet kept getting dropped, probably due to an addressing error. I finally traced the source of that problem to a Linksys Velop that apparently had started acting as a router, though the routing feature had been disabled. I took that out of the system. The other device has operated normally for a fortnight. Today I resorted the router and my two ethernet switches hoping that would cure this problem....didn't help.

It's nice to know that i"m not alone with the problem. Incidentally, I'm obsessed by classical music, have been for 60 years since I discovered it as a child. I once was an amateur composer, though never any good. I LOVE your software!!

Please see this post and subsequent discussion for a suggested diagnostic procedure when another user had a similar issue.

If you can post the output requested in the other thread, this should help me understand what is causing the problem.

RE: Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 25-05-2022 23:11

Simon,

First, please excuse my tardy response. We were out of town.

When I enter into Terminal on the Mac the command ssh -1 username x.x.x.x, replacing username with my username on the NAS and inserting the correct IP address, I get the response SSH protocol v. 1 is no longer supported.

Meanwhile, I run a second NAS with a second copy of Minimserver, etc. MinimWatch had been showing an icon for it, but it's grey. I found that one of the discs had crashed and swapped it out for a new one, thinking that might be the problem. Same problem. I restarted the NAS, no change.

I checked the firewall on my Mac. MinimWatch is allowed incoming connections. When I tried to remove it from the list and restarted the Mac, MinimWatch was still allowed access. Apparently it qualifies as downloaded signed software. I think that I have two problems at the same time.

RE: Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 26-05-2022 13:43

Simon,

Thinking that my problem is my desktop I started MinimWatch on a Mac laptop that I use to maintain another Sinology NAS running MinimServer at a second house that we have. I had the same problem. I then thought to try it on a Windows machine, but I am completely stymied in trying to figure out how to install OpenSSH on that device as I am an even more ignorant Windows user that I am a Mac user.

Finally, looking up the SSH v.2 protocol I entered ssh username@x.x.x.x and received the reply:
ssh: connect to host x.x.x.x port 22: Connection refused

Any ideas?

Thanks!

RE: Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 26-05-2022 18:17

I've tried an older Mac. It supports SSH v.1. When I entered ssh -1 username x.x.x.x I got the response
ssh: could not resolve hostname username: nodename nor servname provided, or not known

I then tried the other LAN port on the NAS and received as a response:
ssh: connect to host x.x.x.x port 22: Connection refused

Trying the same command on the other NAS, the one for which I get the greyed MinimWatch icon, give the response immediately above.

Hope this helps. I'm completely stumped.

Some progress. SSH was disabled on both NAS's. I enabled it. Logging in with SSH v.2 and doing as you directed I received this output:

RE: Shuts down on startup - simoncn - 27-05-2022 10:35

Thanks for this information. The output shows the same problem that the other user reported (a file permission error). This problem was fixed in MinimServer 2.1.2-2102 and I don't know why you are seeing it after having installed 2.1.2-2102.

You should be able to fix the problem by doing a manual download and install of MinimServer 2.1.2 as described in this section. This should set the correct file permissions and allow MinimServer to start normally.

RE: Shuts down on startup - SpruceFan - 27-05-2022 19:20

Simon,

I uninstalled MinimServer, choosing the complete uninstallation. I restarted the NAS and then did a manual reinstall of the appropriate package. The problem persists. I ran SSH again to get the diagnostic output. It looks exactly the same to me, but I really don't know what I'm looking at.

We're about to leave town. Sailboat racing season approaches and we need to prepare our boat for the Newport-Bermuda Race. I'll be back Wednesday morning, UTC-4.

Thanks very much for your help so far.
