Hi
I would like to buy the full version (I run a QNAP server on a UNITI Atom) but when I downloaded the 2.0 Minim server and moved it into my applications folder and opened it, the MinimServer icon isn’t showing on the Menu bar of my MacBook 16 inch pro M1. I am currently running Ventura 13.01. I also need help to choose the correct content directory and have no clear idea how to write this.
I did download the correct Java update for an M1 Mac and installed it according to your guidance,
Any assistance would be gratefully received!

There is a bug that causes a startup failure to happen when using Java 19. This bug is fixed in the latest MinimServer update but you can't apply this update because of the crash.
The only solution is to remove Java 19 and install Java 18 instead. You will then be able to start MinimServer. After MinimServer has started, it will automatically apply the latest update (update 220). After this, you could go back to Java 19 if you wish but there is no advantage in doing this.
When MinimServer is running, you will be able to choose a content directory by clicking Properties from the minim icon on the menu bar.
However, with your setup a better approach would be to install and run MinimServer on your QNAP NAS and run MinimWatch instead of MinimServer on your Mac. For information about how to do this, see this page. Make sure you have Java 18 installed before you start MinimWatch.

To remove Java 19, see this section.
Installing Java 18 is a bit more involved because it has been moved to an archive page. It is simpler to install Java 17, which also solves the problem you are seeing. To install Java 17, download "Arm 64 DMG Installer" from this page and install it using the instructions in this section.
Edit: Please also consider my suggestion to run MinimServer on the QNAP and MinimWatch on the Mac. You will have a better experience of using MinimServer if you do this. Also, this setup would work without needing to change your Java version on the Mac.

Well I have now installed MinimServer on the QNAP as suggested Simon and installed MinimWatch on my mac and the Java developer you advised. But sadly on opening MinimWatch noting int the menu bar and I have this error on the QNAP on the screenshot, not sure what to do next, I have followed your instructions to the letter, at least I've tried!

MinimWatch is not showing the icon because of this QNAP error. The first step is to fix the QNAP error. After that, we can see whether MinimWatch is working correctly.
I think the error message is caused by some problem with how file permissions are set up on your QNAP. In File Station on the QNAP, do you see a folder named MinimServer? If so, does this folder contain a file named minimserver.log and/or a file whose name starts with minimserver-crash?
If you see these files, please download them to your Mac and post them as file attachments to a post here. For instructions on how to post a file attachment, see this post.

This is quite a puzzle. The problem occurs when MinimServer finishes scanning your library and tries to rename its temporary cache file to a permanent file. I have never seen this fail before.
I think the vital clue might be from your first post: I run a QNAP server on a UNITI Atom. Is this some kind of virtualised QNAP environment rather than a real QNAP NAS?

No, Simon, the QNAP server which sits on my desk is wired into the Netgear ORBI router and the Naim Unity ATOM is a standard high quality streamer which also has a wired connection to the ORBI. The Naim app works well to access radio, Spotify, and has output to 2 wired speakers in the house, kitchen and living room Perhaps I just work without the Minim functionality which is a pity but I have no problem recording my CDs through the dB Poweramp Music Converter onto the QNAP. Thanks for trying though, but I guess there is no point in paying for the full functionality of 2.0 Minim Server. Simon

Thanks for this information. I would like to work with you to discover what is causing this error and fix it, if you are willing to do this.
I have done more investigation into this error message and it appears to be caused by an error in your Java installation on the QNAP. Please open the QNAP App Center and do the following:
1) Find the icon for JRE 8.151.2 and remove this package.
2) Reinstall this package (it is in the Developer Tools section)
3) Make sure the JRE icon is orange (enabled), not grey (disabled)
4) Find the icon for MinimServer and select Stop, followed by Start
Does this solve the problem?
If you still get the same error, you can revert to your original plan to run MinimServer on your Mac and access the files on the QNAP using a network share. The contentDir path for the QNAP network share will be something like /Volumes/Multimedia (you might need to change Multimedia to the correct name for your music library shared folder on the QNAP).
I understand that getting this working is proving unreasonably difficult and I appreciate your patience and understanding.
