It is a combination of Tailscale, Minimserver and BubbleUPnP which made me happy
STEPS
1. Create Tailscale account
tailscale makes you a unique link between two devices/machines. Each device needs its own piece of software. Tailscale builds a secure connection between devices (VPN) by newly assigned IP-adresses.
Take care if you perform re-authorization. The tailscale IP-address for the QNAP server is used when performing step 5.
Tailscale VPN might conflict with vpn installed on your device. My VPN app on the phone offered settings for an exception of the tailscale IP-address.
Disabling the key expiry date for devices makes re-authorization obsolete.
2. Install Tailscale QNAP
A simple login is enough. Note that the app from the qnap store is an older version from the tailscale app
3. Install Tailscale Android
A simple login is enough. Please note that the app contains a status flag. You need to switch to Active. If at a later stage you see that the connection is not working look at this toggle.
4. Install QBubbleUPnP on QNAP
- You will find the app QBubbleUPnP within the qnap store. Please note the Q
- Configure
- Settings Tab Network and Security
- Credentials must fit to an existing QNAP account
- Check Allow to access the server from the Internet required by BubbleUPnP for Android and foobar2000 for Internet access
- Settings Tab Media Servers for Minimserver
- Check Make this Media Server available in BubbleUPnP for Android and foobar2000 for Internet access
5. On Android configure BubbleUPnP
- Enter a meaningful name
- Enter Server address including port http://tailscale_ip_for_qnap_server_name:58050
or https://tailscale_ip_for_qnap_server_name:58051 .
Tailscale IP-address for QNAP server can be found in tailscale account and the apps on QNAP and on your phone
- Credentials must fit to an existing QNAP account.
- Choose your preferred connection type mobile/wifi/ethernet
