This is very strange. I have done this with a USB-attached external drive on my MacBook with no problems. My drive is formatted as NTFS. I will try formatting a drive as exFAT to see what happens. How did you do the formatting?

Out of interest, why did you choose to use exFAT instesad of NTFS?
