You will need to back up your music, then remove all partitions from the disk (using fdisk or similar) before the ReadyNAS Duo v2 will accept it.

Hi Simon,

Not sure if you can help or not... I just installed Java and Minimserver on my new ReadyNas Duo. My upnp device (Naim SuperUniti) discovers the minimserver via its n-stream app. When I select the minimserver it just says 'folder view' and 'empty' although I added one test album to the directory: shared/music. Any ideas?

Not sure but I think you've already purchased a new device, but (and this is perhaps a question to Simon as much as to the OP) would an alternative be to buy something like a RaspberryPi?

You can install Minimserver on the RaspberryPi which looks to the existing NAS via NFS or SMB for the files.

A Raspberry Pi with an attached USB drive is a great alternative to a NAS if your main use will be to run MinimServer. MinimServer 0.8.1 has excellent integration with the Raspberry Pi, and it should be easier to install MinimServer on a Raspberry Pi than it is on most NASs. There's no need to install Java because this is now included with Raspbian.

A NAS does many other things such as backup, RAID, etc., so you might want a NAS for other reasons. Also, the processor in the Raspberry Pi is less powerful than the processor in a NAS, and it might become heavily loaded when transcoding very high-resolution files.

I wouldn't recommend using SMB/CIFS to access files on a network share from MinimServer, as there are significant performance issues with this setup. I haven't tried doing this with NFS. There's no problem with a USB-attached drive.

What is 'very high resolution' in this context, please? Would the Pi cope with transcoding 16 bit FLAC files (CD rips) to WAV24 on Ethernet?

Yes, that should be fine. I'm not sure about transcoding 24/192 source material. It might be OK, but I haven't tried it yet.

I just tried it and the CPU peaks at over 70%. The music is playing OK, but this level of CPU consumption is rather too high for comfort.
