Tired of twonky's let-downs, I'm interested in MinimServer. Has anyone migrated from Twonky and could highlight the pro's & cons?

More importantly (as a non techie) is MinimServer compatible with my Nas and reasonably straight forward to install (I don't know how to right in linux etc)

Netgear Router WNR3500v2 – Netgear GS108 Switch - Ready NAS Ultra 2 ( hard wiredCAT5 - RJ45’s)
Akurate DS, Akurate Kontrol, 2 x 4200, 1 x 2200, Aktive 242’s

In my view:

Pros:
- Transcoding on the fly, which is not possible on my Twonky (NAS), so if you have FLAC files, it will sound better, as it transcodes the FLAC file to WAV which leaves the player unharmed regarding transcoding.
- Stunning fast browsing
- Low on resources (memory and CPU which Twonky isn't)
- Good compatibility with formats like AIFF meta tagging (Twonky has not)
- Fast buildup of library 2-5 minutes on a 20.000 songs database (Twonky takes a bit longer)
- Fast response from owner/programmer

Cons:
- Have not found one thing yet that puts Twonky in favor of MinimServer, yet.

Hope this helps out with your primary question Big Grin

RE: Netgear UltraNAS
Simon,

I've got two folders with music named Audio FLAC and Audio FLAC HD. mergeFolderAlbums=true. When I choose "by Artists" I see one artist (for example Miles Davis) with albums from both music folders. When I choose Folder View I see two music libraries. To merge means to see one artist again. Is it possible?

If you're using folder view, you're focusing in on the contents of a single folder and all its subfolders, and you can't see anything else beyond that. This is the meaning of using folder view, so it isn't possible to change it.

To do what you want, you can use tag selection to find your HD tracks instead of using folder selection. You could add a suitable custom tag to your HD tracks, or you could use the special index tag #AudioData to see all the tracks of a given resolution, such as 24/192000. For more information about #AudioData, see this section.

In the next release, the number of choices in the #AudioData index will be reduced, which should make it easier to use. See this post for an indication of how this might work.

RE: Netgear UltraNAS
Yet another question. I've just notised that albums are listed in alphabetical order by its name. How to change it to be listed by the year of release which is in metadata, of course?

You can use the albumSortTags property to change the album sort order. See this section of the User guide for details.

Do you want the albums to be sorted first by date, or first by artist?

To sort them first by date, set albumSortTags to 'Date, Artist, Album'.

To sort them first by artist, set albumSortTags to 'Artist, Date, Album'.

I would like albums to be sorted by 1. Artist, 2. Album and 3. Date. And it works but all albums are sorted by its name, not by the date of release. When I choose Artist / Album, I would like all albums to be sorted by the date of release. Is it possible to set it?

What choices are you making from the top-level menu to get the list of albums that isn't being sorted correctly? Are you using:

1) Artist -> xxx albums

or:

2) Artist -> Album (with Album added to indexTags)

The albumSortTags setting changes the sort order for 1), but it doesn't change the sort order for 2).

RE: Netgear UltraNAS
What do you mean xxx albums?
From the top-level menu I press Artist -> Albums and there are albums in alphabetical order but I would like to be listed by the date of release.
